How current the data is
Positions refresh every few minutes, around the clock.
"Position received" on each vessel tells you when that vessel last transmitted. That is the figure that matters, not when the page was drawn.
A vessel that has not transmitted for a couple of hours drops off the map rather than sitting there showing a stale position. It reappears as soon as it reports again.
What you can do here
See where each tracked vessel is now, with an arrow for the way it is facing and a trail of where it has been.
Browse the vessel list, grouped by home port and showing each vessel's country. Untick one to hide it.
Click a vessel for its speed, course, status and destination, and a link to its full record on MarineTraffic.
See at a glance which vessels have recently started or stopped moving.
Show where a vessel — or the whole fleet — has been over the last 24 hours, rather than just the recent trail.
Switch between satellite and street maps, with an optional layer showing buoys, lights and the shipping lanes.
Positions come from vessels' own AIS transmitters. Coverage at sea is patchy, and a vessel may
show an old position or none at all. This is not a navigational aid and must not be used as one.
